📂 Filing & Photo Organizing Guide

Simple, stress-free ways to organize your computer so you can always find exactly what you're looking for without the headache.

1. Don't Store Everything on the Desktop

It is tempting to save every new document or photo straight to your computer's Desktop screen, but this quickly turns into a messy, overwhelming wall of icons. Instead, use the built-in "Documents" and "Pictures" folders. Think of your Desktop like your actual physical desk—it should only hold the few things you are working on right now!

2. Name Files So They Make Sense Later

When saving a file, avoid leaving the name as "Document1" or "Scan445". Take two extra seconds to rename it with the date and exactly what it is (for example: "2026-Tax-Return" or "Recipe-Banana-Bread"). This makes it incredibly easy to use the search bar to find it months or even years later.

3. Taming the Family Photo Chaos

If you have thousands of photos dumped into one folder, organizing them can feel impossible. The best trick is to create a new folder for the Year (e.g., "2026 Photos"), and inside that, make folders for specific events (e.g., "01 - Sarahs Birthday", "02 - Margaret River Trip"). Tackling it one small batch at a time makes the job easy.

4. Clear Out the "Downloads" Folder

Every time you save a PDF menu from a restaurant or a program installer, it goes into your "Downloads" folder. Over time, this folder becomes a massive digital junk drawer that slows down your storage. Once a month, open your Downloads folder, move anything important to your Documents, and simply delete the rest.

5. Keep a Safe Copy (Backups)

Hard drives don't last forever. The golden rule of digital filing is that if a document or photo only exists in one place, it isn't safe. Consider using a simple USB external hard drive to copy your files over every few months, or ask a professional to help you set up an automatic Cloud backup system so your memories are never lost to a broken computer.
